From top to bottom, left to right: "Sun Corner", 1968 by Helen Frankenthaler; "Neferchidea", 1987 by Nancy Graves; "Beach Scene", 1971 by Willem de Kooning; "The Astra Tool", 1985 by Jim Dine; "Peaches", 1979 by Andy Warhol; and "Transfiguration", 1973 by Salvador Dali.
In 1978, John Graves first entered the world of art and antiques working for interior designer Julia Walker working with clients in their executive offices in Downtown Jacksonville, Florida and its surrounding areas such as Avondale and Ortega.

A year later in
1979, Graves would open his very own operation, The Collector's Exchange, inside the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida. The once world's largest indoor swimming pool was drained and small side rooms at the bottom were offered as small storefronts coined the St. Augustine Lightner Mall. John Graves would be among the very first group of small businesses to open there. He offered antique art, furniture, and other accessories.

In early
1981, Graves moved his gallery to 4570 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL. He began networking with print publishers and other art dealers across the country and in Europe.

In Spring of
1984, he moved his operation to 5627 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida at Lakewood Plaza representing print workshops and publishers London Arts Group, Perma Press, Vision Nouvelle.

Four years later in early
1988, the gallery moved to 11362 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida at the Gates of Olde Mandarin. Artwork by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Pierre Marie Brisson, Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Erte, Marc Chagall, Yaacov Agam, and others were exhibited.

In early
1991, Graves moved to his final Jacksonville, Florida location in Riverplace greatly expanding with three main rooms. More 20th Century artists were exhibited such as Leonardo Neirman, Robert Rauschenberg, Marko Spalatin, Georges Bracque, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Jim Dine, and Fritz Scholder. He also offered antique prints of Botany and Ornithology such as John Gould, John James Audubon, William Curtis, James Sowerby, and more. The gallery would diversify further with antique European paintings and watercolors as well.

In April of
1994, Graves would take on a large move leaving Florida behind to Historic Central Virginia landing in Orange County. Several locations were opened over the years including Washington D.C. with his main locations being Somerset, Gordonsville, and lastly Charlottesville, Virginia. The gallery would take on a new name, Old Somerset Print Shop and also Graves Fine Art Gallery. During this time, Contemporary graphics and art would generally be stored away in flat-files and Graves focused on antique European and American paintings, works on paper, and prints. In 2005, the gallery moved its location to 117 South Main Street, Gordonville, Virgina. There in 2011, John's son, Alex, would enter the business with his father. The gallery would expand and bring back 20th Century artists again in addition to the antique inventory. A second and final location in Gordonsville would open at 205 South Main Street in 2013 under a new and still current operating name, Graves International Art. John's other son, Jack, would also become involved in the business here as a fine artist as the gallery would begin to represent and exhibit his artwork.

In October of
2015, the gallery moved to 306 East Jefferson Street, Charlottesville, Virginia. Here, the gallery would partner with online marketplaces 1stdibs and Artsy. Printmaking by many Modern and Contemporary masters such as Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Ellsworth Kelly, Josef Albers, Christopher Wool and others would be exhibited. The gallery would participate in thirty-six First Fridays to local art lovers and exhibition goers. Jack Graves III's paintings are placed into private collections across the country and the world. The gallery would continue to operate here for three years until the Graves family decided to make the big move back to its home state of Florida.

In
2019, Graves International Art moved back to its very origin of St. Augustine, Florida. Today it operates solely online, but retains a private gallery space by appointment. Notable works acquired and offered in recent years have been a painting by Robert Longo, a complete print portfolio by Josef Albers, an outdoor sculpture by Nancy Graves, a large work on paper by Philip Pearlstein, and an extremely rare diptych example of printmaking by Joan Mitchell, among others.
